CROCHET MARKET BAG FREE PATTERN

My inspiration for this pattern was almost every single net market bag I came accross in Slovak eco-friendly shops.

As a big fan of Molla/Liina cotton yarn, I made two market bags using the same pattern but the different versions of the yarn.

For the bigger one (lavender), I was using Liina/Molla 18 ply and for the smaller one (light grey) Liina/Molla 12 ply . As you can see from the picture, the difference is obvious.

If you decide to use 12 ply version, you can make 3 bags out of one cone. And if you go with 18ply version, you can make 2 bigger bags out o one 500g cone.

I used the same pattern for both market bags. I made the pattern as simple as possible and a great thing about it is, that you do the whole bag consecutively.

Chain 153.

Row 1 ->  work 1 single corchet (sc) into the 9the chain from your hook. *Chain 6, skip 3 chains, 1 sc to the next (4th) chain*. Repeat from * to * until the end of the row and we get 37 chain spaces („semi-arches“). Turn your work.

Row 2 – 47 -> *Chain 6, 1 sc into the chain space*. Repeat from * to * until the end of the row.

Row 48-> *Chain 4, 1 sc into the chain space*. Rep. from * to * until the end of the row.

The base is rectangular shape. Turn your work 90 degrees, so that he shorter size is now at the top.

Row 1 -> 1 sc into every chain space ( you have 24 sts)

Row 2-4 -> work 24 stchs in sc.

This is our base for a handle. At the end of the 4th row continue crocheting chain 90 and slip stitch (ss) on the other side of the row, skipping 22 stitches.

You can mark this stitch as the one, where the circle around the bag will begin.

Turn your work 90 degrees, 4 sc alongside the 4 rows and start to strenghten the side parts of the bag.

You have 37 chain spaces in front of you, work as follows: 2 sc into the first 10 chain spaces, 1 sc into the 11th- 27th chain spaces, 2 sc into the last 10 chain spaces (57 sts).

Turn your work 90 degrees, work this side as the opposite side.

Row 1 -> 1 sc into every chain space (you have 24 sts)

Row 2-4 -> work 24 stchs in sc.

This is our base for a handle. At he end of the 4th row continue crocheting chain 90 and slip stitch (ss) on the other side of the row, skipping 22 stitches.

Turn your work 90 degrees, 4 sc alongside the 4 rows and start to strenghten the remaining part of the bag.

You have 37 chain spaces in front of you, work as follows:

2 sc into the first 10 chain spaces, 1 sc into the 11th- 27th chain spaces, 2 sc into the last 10 chain spaces (57 sts).

4 sc alongside 4 rows, 90 sc into the chain 90 of the bag handle and continue sc in circle along the whole bag and handles until you finish 4 rows.

Finish with slip stitch, cut the yarn and weave it  in.
